Pro.Bio.MAX™'s intestinal benefits
The intestinal microflora of each individual is highly specific and remains remarkably stable over time. The intestinal tract of an adult human contains microflora comprising approximately 1011 microorganisms per gram, with approximately 400 to 500 different bacterial species. A balanced intestinal microflora helps ensure optimal functioning of the intestinal tract. Research suggests that when the intestinal microflora is out of balance, it may affect overall health.

Pro.Bio.MAX™ contains a unique culture called LBB. Pro.Bio.MAX™ is believed to have a positive effect on the balance of an individual’s intestinal bacteria. A balanced intestinal microflora acts as a barrier against colonization of harmful bacteria. The extent to which Pro.Bio.MAX™ can help maintain a beneficial balance of intestinal microflora and boost the body’s immune response is currently the subject of several scientific research studies in the U.S.

The specific strain LBB was selected by a physician at LacPro™ for its beneficial effect on the intestinal microflora. LBB is a transient bacterium that aids the intestinal microflora balance as it passes through the body. The microorganism does not colonize the gastrointestinal tract, thus, to achieve the desired health benefits, individuals must consume the product each day. Pro.Bio.MAX™ is thought to maintain a healthy balance of beneficial microflora, balance out the instability of the intestinal flora in certain disease states, and act as a general immune modulator.

How is the intestinal flora balance disrupted?
The intestinal flora balance changes with age and is affected by diet, the environment, hormonal changes and stress level. This balance can be disturbed during physical or psychological stress, with age, in menopause, during drug treatment (e.g., antibiotics) and in the event of acute or chronic intestinal diseases. The intestinal microflora balance can be temporarily restored by consuming Pro.Bio.MAX™ daily.

What is the difference between L. bulgaricus B-30892 and other probiotic cultures?
Scientific researchers agree that the specific strain is critical to the testing and identification of specific health benefits. As shown by scientific publications, probiotic microorganism selection at the strain level is of primary importance. Because probiotic strains are unique, even closely related strains from the same species may have significantly different health properties and technological behavior. Thus, each strain must be studied individually.

The probiotic strain LBB and the number of viable units of LBB in Pro.Bio.MAX™ distinguish it from any other probiotic because it is specifically designed to maintain a healthy intestinal flora balance and boost the immune system. Additionally, Pro.Bio.MAX™ is specifically formulated to provide the additional health benefits that are needed by adults and the elderly. Two other frequently studied probiotics include: L. rhamnosus GG, which has been studied primarily in children and has not shown specific benefits for adults and the elderly; and Saccharomyces boulardii, a yeast, which offers health benefits but must be provided in conjunction with high dose Vancomycin therapy and has been associated with cases of fungemia.

What is the difference between L. bulgaricus B-30892 and over-the-counter yogurt?
Other commercially available yogurt products with live cultures may not contain specific strains with proven health benefits. Equally important, they may not contain the organisms in sufficient levels to help adults and the elderly to maintain a healthy intestinal balance and to boost the immune response.

Why is Pro.Bio.MAX™ beneficial to the elderly?
Elderly patients have are more susceptible to infections, in part as a result of possible changes in intestinal microflora. Beneficial or protective species decline in numbers and diversity, whereas pathogenic bacterial populations increase. The intestinal microflora may change as a result of a change in mucin composition, decline in immune response, excessive use of antibiotics, dietary changes, or other causes.

Pro.Bio.MAX™ has been specifically formulated, by a physician, for adults and the elderly, to provide 30 billion units of LBB per 10-ounce serving to maintain their intestinal microflora and to boost their immune response. Addtionally, Pro.Bio.MAX™ provides the nutritional benefits (9 grams of protein, calcium, Vitamin A, and calories) that are needed by adults and the elderly. Pro.Bio.MAX™ is also low in carbohydrates and lactose-reduced, so that diabetic and lactose-intolerant adults and elderly can safely benefit from LBB.
