About Us

LacPro is an innovative probiotic biotechnology company, focused on researching, developing, and commercializing medical food and biotherapeutic products to address unmet or insufficiently addressed health care needs. Initially, our efforts target gastrointestinal (GI) ailments, including Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Our first product was introduced October 20008, at the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (ADA/FNCE). This medical food product, Antibiotic Assist™ is based upon our proprietary and beneficial probiotic technology that provides relief from symptoms, enhances GI tract health, and reduces the occurrence of infections for patients and long-term care residents prescribed antibiotic therapies, which often result in antibiotic-associated diarrhea, specifically Clostridium difficile infection.

History

LacPro was founded in 1998 by Dr. Gregory G. Bojrab, a Fort Wayne native and practicing internist, when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC). His gastroenterologist treated him with first line anti-inflammatory agents, which were ineffective and, paradoxically, worsened his condition.

While the exact cause of UC was and remains unknown, a growing body of research indicated an altered bowel flora played some role in the development of the disease. Yet, most research was directed toward improving agents to block the inflammatory response rather than correcting the ecologic imbalance. However, it seemed reasonable to Dr. Bojrab that UC could be treated by a probiotic that corrected the altered bowel flora, if the right strain(s) were found. While several attempts were made to treat his condition with commercially available yogurts, none proved to be effective.

Fortuitously, Dr. Bojrab identified and isolated a functional strain and developed a single strain fermented beverage that not induced a remission, but daily use has maintained remission for 9 years.

Surprising and consistent success was also observed in patients with antibiotic-associated diarrhea, including Clostridium difficile Infection, even those who had not responded to traditional therapies.

Based on his personal success as well as the success of his patients, Dr. Bojrab recognized the significance of the product to safely and naturally resolve, and possibly prevent, a variety of gastrointestinal ailments. Thus, in October 2005, the company formally launched operations to research, develop and commercialize medical foods and biotherapeutics based on the company’s proprietary probiotic strain.
